Rye Pier Stage 2

Sureside provided design services to Parks Victoria for the reconstruction of the remainder of rye pier following completion of part of the approach in stage 1. the asset is located in rye, victoria on the mornington peninsula.

parks victoria were seeking an upgrade to the pier’s function, specifically in regard to berthing capacity along the approach in proximity to the pier head.

initial efforts focussed on establishing the functional requirements for the facility, giving weight to the challenges of achieving the mooring and berth rating of the structure. achieving functional systems for a light timber timber structure have their own unique challenges where a berthing face is not land backed nor where a concrete deck is not used to effectively distribute load. other constraints such as available draught also presented constraints to the expectations of stakeholders

further challenges came up with assumptions around geology influencing structure behaviour in response to berthing actions in particular. targeted investigations were undertaken to inform modelling and refine the design,

post-construction, sureside provided certification for the project.

certification was provided subject to adjusting some detailing to ensure sound load transfer from deck to seabed.

sureside’s involvement meant that the design was able to be delivered within a very limited budget and also was able to provide a constructible design based on very limited information on existing conditions.
