Warneet South Jetty Temporary Works

parks victoria requested sureside to review recommendations for the replacement of warneet south jetty.

sureside attended site to assess the structure and review findings presented in a previous and recent report prepared for the department of transport. warneet south jetty was constructed with pultruded pre-stressed slab which is extremely problematic in a maritime environment. the slabs were exhibiting substantial distress, which is a stage where slabs are well beyond their serviceable condition. the report provided made some poorly based recommendations based upon a low number of ultrasonic measurements. on site observations confirmed that the protective coating of steel components was still substantially intact and corrosion product was substantially lighter than would be required if the ultrasonic measurements were accurate.

Ultrasonic measurement interpretation is an important data set to interpret accurately. exact sampling points were reviewed and it was observed that not all measurement aligned to observed condition.

sureside identified the possibility of a much reduced scope to keep the asset open. However it was also identified at that stage that there was only a slim chance that use of existing components woudl be adequate. as it happened, use of existing components alone was insufficient to reopen the structure unless the existing structure was partially demolished. this necessitated that two large-size beams would be required to supplement the structure’s residual capacity. sureside prepared an indicative cost that showed the alternative design exceeded parks victorias budget, hence teh temporary works did not proceed.
